Singapore Court Cuts Hong Kong Visitor’s Money Laundering Sentence to Three Years

A Singapore court has reduced the prison sentence of a 25-year-old Hong Kong visitor from four years to three years in a case involving luxury watches, gold and suspected criminal proceeds.

The man travelled to Singapore and followed an online contact’s instructions to make purchases using payment cards provided to him. He faced 24 charges including cheating, computer misuse and offences under Singapore’s proceeds-of-crime law, and pleaded guilty to six charges.

The appeal court reduced the aggregate sentence after reviewing his role and culpability. The case shows how seemingly simple “purchasing” assignments can place couriers in the laundering chain.
