Cambodia Sentences Eight Foreign Nationals to Life for Drug Trafficking and Money Laundering

Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Provincial Court sentenced eight foreign nationals to life imprisonment on 29 January 2026 for drug trafficking and money laundering in a large maritime smuggling case.
The defendants, nationals from mainland China, Taiwan and Indonesia, were each fined 400 million Cambodian riel, equivalent to approximately US$100,000. Reports differed in how they classified the Chinese and Taiwanese defendants, but agreed that eight men were convicted.
The offences were committed between January 2023 and 22 January 2024. Authorities seized approximately 1.5 tonnes of drugs after intercepting a vessel reported to have travelled from Laos into waters off Sihanoukville. The court treated the laundering activity as part of the financial infrastructure supporting the trafficking operation.
The judgment underscores Cambodia’s use of money-laundering charges in major narcotics cases and the cross-border risks created by maritime routes linking production, transit and coastal distribution points in Southeast Asia.
