Singaporean Malone Lam Pleads Guilty in $245 Million Crypto Theft and Laundering Case
Singapore citizen Malone Lam has pleaded guilty in Washington, D.C. to participating in a racketeering conspiracy tied to an international cybercrime enterprise that stole and laundered more than US$245 million in cryptocurrency.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced the plea on 8 September 2026. Lam, 22, pleaded guilty to one count of participating in a RICO conspiracy. A status hearing has been set for 8 December 2026.
Social engineering and crypto theft
According to U.S. prosecutors and court documents, the criminal enterprise operated from no later than October 2023 through at least May 2025. Members used social engineering and, in some instances, home break-ins to obtain information that enabled them to drain victims’ cryptocurrency wallets.
Prosecutors said Lam organised the social-engineering operation, identified target victims and coordinated the roles of other participants. The stolen cryptocurrency was then used to fund high-value spending, including luxury watches and clothing, private jet rentals, expensive rental properties, nightclub services and exotic vehicles.
AML relevance
The case illustrates the intersection between cyber-enabled theft, cryptocurrency laundering and the conversion of illicit proceeds into luxury goods and services. It also highlights the cross-border nature of modern crypto-enabled financial crime, with participants based across several U.S. states and abroad.
Lam’s guilty plea applies to his own participation in the RICO conspiracy. Allegations concerning other participants remain subject to the status of their individual proceedings.
